Dishes

For whatever reason - supposedly for the kid's "hope chest"  - I spent $5 on a box of dishes last week.  About 6 place settings, with extra plates.  It's a British pattern, and so pretty.  If the offspring doesn't want it, I'll use it myself.

It's a pattern called Hedgerow, made in England.  Blackberries and flowers.

For the bargain price of $5, we got 12 large plates, 11 medium plates (salad plates?), 4 smaller plates, 12 saucers, 9 teacups, and 4 bowls.

More puzzles

First, there's a second Sam Savitt rodeo puzzle on eBay right now.  One is priced at $134.99 (eek!).  The second one, bidding starts at $99.99, or the Buy it Now is $169.99.

Good grief.

As far as ongoing puzzles, I bought two at Upscale Resale last week or the week before.  One is a Springbok, a 500-piece photo of someone fishing.

The other is a Eurographics 1000-piece collage of seed and fruit catalogs.  I paid $8 for that one (Upscale seems to be upping the prices), but I finished it yesterday and all the pieces are there.  So, the $8 wasn't wasted.  But used puzzles are always a gamble, so I try not to pay too much.

Last weekend, I also finished a Mudpuppy puzzle called Slowpokes.  500 pieces.  These are decent puzzles, the pieces fit together well, but the cardboard seems kind of flimsy.

And before Slowpokes, I put together one of the new Springboks from the Orscheln sale, a 1000-piece puzzle of retro soda cans.  Springbok still has good random-cut pieces, but the fit isn't as good (mostly because of pieces that don't get cut cleanly), and the cardboard seems thinner than it used to be.

She sells seashells by the sea shore

Went to Goodwill today to return the Slik tripod from last week.  I've got a "real" tripod and 2 Gorillapods now, so the extra tripod wasn't really necessary.  And, $6 is $6.  While I was there, I of course had to look around.  Not much to speak of, until I saw a big seashell misplaced amongst the furniture.

Bigger than my hand, in really nice shape, and only $3.

And, it was sitting next to a bag of shells, also in lovely shape, also $3.

So, I didn't come home with $6 more than I left with, but I've got some gorgeous shells, and can at least pretend I've been shell-hunting at the beach.

Estate saling

Went to a couple of estate sales today.  One ad mentioned "vintage metal horses" but no sign of the horses either at the sales or in the online pictures.  Oh well.  I did get some things I was looking for, though.

Sale #1

Three flat sheets, queen size, and two pillow cases, 100% cotton, white(ish).  Sheets were $1 each, cases 50c.

These are going to be transformed.  The sheets are probably going to be a test for dyeing and making simple curtains, with one saved for costume or sewing yardage.  Pillowcases may be dyed or turned into napkins.

The three wooden boxes are a set, they stack and one has wooden feet.  $1 each, so $3 for the set. I picked up the top two before I found the third one, and plan to paint or stain them and hang them on the wall as shadowbox displays for some of the Breyer Stablemates.

Second sale, I was hoping to find the metal horses.  No joy.  But I did find some goodies.  The View-Master lot has a viewer and some old discs - Niagara Falls (incomplete), the complete Carlsbad Caverns, tour 1 and 2, NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, and some Disney discs.  Also a pattern for vests, a vintage crochet book, a compass, 6 white napkins with a subtle Greek key design, and 2 men's hankies.  Viewmaster was $10, cloth goods 25c each, misc stuff 50c each.  Total $13.50 at this sale, $7 at the other sale.
